Progress on rehab and#2
I’m not sure I can call it progress but I am doing repetitive exercises that do help. In a picture today I tried something new. It really felt awkward because suddenly your body is a natural position but you can’t feel it.
My occupational therapy surprised me today. I will be able to use electric stimulation and will receive a unit that I can use at home and my insurance pays for it that is the best part I guess. So every day I’ll use it for my wrists extensions muscles. I’m confident that they will wake up.
I am trying to settle to the routine between work and rehabilitation/is just very different that I am used to… I’m not complaining I’m trying to figure out what’s the best feasible solution so I can catch all the boxes.
I promised to myself that I will start writing and make it a habit that see how I do…..
Halloween party
I’m sure you read about it on Facebook but just in case you didn’t please come out to Stamford; I would like to see you all.
Please invite anyone you think might enjoy such a fun night.

rehab and progress
we reached $50,000
The fund-raising efforts reach today $50,000-which is truly amazing, the majority as mentioned before was used to purchase the van. Thank you
Purchased van- dodge caravan
I wanted to share w people should ithyou the picture of the van your funds allowed me to purchase. Thank you so much again.
Thank you!!!
To all my friends, colleagues, and acquaintances who have embraced me with your generous sharing of self and resources:
Help comes in many ways, and in all of these you have been there for me during every step of my challenging journey.
It was your thoughts, prayers, and well wishes that buoyed my spirit during the most critical period of my recovery.
As I moved forward it was your continuing encouragement and faith in my ability to fight for a positive outcome that helped me push through my initial phase of therapy.
And now it is your incredible generosity that to makes it possible for me to continue moving forward in an effort to rebuild my life. It is because of funds you have provided me with that I have been able to purchase a van.
This mobility has provided me with the opportunity to obtain state-of-the-art rehabilitation at the Burke Institute in Westchester, and to return to work part-time at the job I love at IBM. Â
Therefore, I want take this opportunity to acknowledge your efforts and offer my heartfelt thanks to all of you for your remarkable outpouring of support.
Please continue to follow my progress on Facebook and on my website at www.silonova.com It is, after all, your victory as well as mine.
Burke rehabilitation center
I finally settled in USA I mean I need to fix up a lot of things at the apartment but I can do it as I go. I enrolled in another rehabilitation center-Burke rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains-the plan so far is to exercise 2 to 3 times a week for 2 to 3 hours. As the time goes I would like to buy equipment so I can exercise at home. My first session at Burke is tomorrow so I’ll let you know how it goes.

table tennis as a new sport?
Prognosis?
I didn’t have great past few days, since I received my prognosis from Dr. from Slovakia. Not sure why everyone here is more negative than positive. My doctor was talking and I could not believe the words…. she basically said that it will be very difficult which I knew but she said that I might never recover my motor skills, not mentioning walking….. oh well where there’s a will there’s a way….. I will just close my eyes and continued fighting without getting sidetracked with some prognosis……
two weekends
My last two weekends were great and I really want to thank you to my great friends Yana, diana, lisa… that came to visit all the way to Slovakia just see me thank you guys and again thank you for posting the pictures on Facebook….love to u
triceps…
I tested positive for triceps movement, particularly the right one. I was pretty happy to see it even though the muscle is very very weak. It is a beginning …
the rest is basically very much the same…… but the paintings.
See Facebook for all the pictures. http://www.facebook.com/diana.silonova
I am preparing myself for another trip to acunpucture-this Friday.
To paint or not to paint…….
Part of my therapy is painting. We have to choose something and I decided to paint. I always wanted to try it … especially after living with Lisa who is a great painter. Well I wish to share with you my first project… feel free to criticize……
embedding acunpucture session
This saturday I went to Budapest to get treatment. After researching and communicating with all here I decided for embedding A. supposedly this method was researched since 1971 and is coming from Vietnam.
My Vietnamese doctor was very nice and my session took two hours; it was something new for me pretty painful I have to say. 45 needles not that I couldn’t feel all where carefully placed into specific spots leaving in them special medicine that will disolve within three weeks.
I’m hopeful that this will help at least a little bit and I’m going back in three weeks.
rehab in KOVACOVA part 3
It is a weekend… and when I look back I have one highlight: I was standing seven minutes on a special machine…….. but it was an interesting feeling. I did not know how much hard it is to breath when a human is standing not sitting.
The weekends here are slow ..Saturdays we work out only until lunch break and Sunday is a rest day….. I am expecting a lot of family members … my father has nine brothers and sister which means I have a lot of cousins…. I will definitely rest so I can be ready for the next week…..
as always my sister is taking and uploading pictures to the website ;

Diana’s home in Slovakia
Over the past few days, I have gotten a couple calls an emails about where Diana is. She left last Saturday, the 23rd, from JFK and returned to Slovakia; where she will stay for a couple of months.
She is doing additional rehab there and is also spending time with family and friends.
She plans to return to CT after and continue her work and coaching as she did prior.
Thanks everybody!
Welcome Home Party Tonight (21 May)
In case you haven’t heard…you can check Diana out tonight at Butterfield 8 Restaurant and Lounge, 112 Bedford St., Stamford, CT between the hours of 6:30 and 10:30.
She is leaving on Saturday to go back to Europe for a couple of months, so stop by or give her a call before then if you want to catch up.
Last Day!
Friday is Diana’s last day of therapy and it is bittersweet saying goodbye to the Shepherd Center. They have been the most professional and kind-hearted people.
We will miss them, and I know that they will miss Diana.
Thank you Shepherd!
Welcome Home Party
Diana is going to be in CT from Saturday the 16th through the 23rd (May).
She wanted to do something where she could say hello to everyone (and vice versa), so we are going to be at Butterfield 8 Restaurant and Lounge in Stamford next Thursday, the 21st, from 6:30 – 10:30 pm.
The address is: 112 Bedford St., Stamford, CT 06901.

The final countdown…Discharge on May 15th!
That’s right.
Diana is going to complete her rehab at the Shepherd Center this Friday, May 15th. That means that she will be coming back to CT for a week prior to her departure to Slovakia. She will spend a couple months visiting with family before coming back to the US in early fall.
She plans to have a get together on Thursday the 21st to re-connect with you all. It will be in Stamford in the evening…more details to follow.

Diana on Facebook!
For all of you who are friends with Diana on Facebook, you might have noticed that she logged on yesterday and uploaded a new photo and changed her status. She’s doing lots of practice on the computer and getting better and better.
Thank you, Thank you!! Italian Music Night and Co-ed Soccer Tournament
This note is a big thank you to everyone who played in the Co-ed Adult Soccer Tournament this weekend. Diana got some really cheery phone calls from her soccer friends. I think they are enjoying the fundraising a little too much…haha!
Also, last night, Enrico had a great turnout in Bridgeport for his music night. Everyone had a really fun time together and they raised some great funds for Diana.
As always, I am touched by your kindness and generosity.
Diana’s sister said to me yesterday, “I don’t understand, why do all the people do these things for Diana?”Â
And Diana just looked at me and we smiled…
Sleepy Sunday
Everyone took the opportunity to sleep in today. It was a slow, hot day and it was good to have a rest before therapy starts again tomorrow.
Saturday at Stone Mountain
We rented a van today and went to Stone Mountain for the day. There 3 famous Confederate figures (Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis) carved into the mountain in the same style as Mt. Rushmore. We took a cable car to the top and saw the view of Atlanta and the Georgia countryside. After that, we found a quiet spot to set up camp by the lake and spent the entire afternoon fishing until it was dark. It was a very nice and relaxing day.
Yes, there is Italian Music!!
This is a final reminder not to miss the fantastic and fabulous Italian musician, Enrico D’Angelo, who will be performing much loved Italian songs by guitar this Sunday, the 26th.
So, if you were wondering what to do on your Sunday, or if you were going to go out anyway, why not stop by Harborview Market in Bridgeport (218 Harborview Ave., Bridgeport, CT) from 4-6pm.
There will be drinks and appetizers for your enjoyment.
All are welcome.
As always, all donations will go to Diana and are tax-deductible.
Sitting Up
One of the new exercises that the therapists have Diana doing involves holding herself up on the mat. They get her in a sitting position and put non-slip gloves on her hands. Then, they position each hand on the mat beside her and she has to hold herself up. After that, she leans to one side on her elbow, and then pushes herself back up to a sitting position; and they repeat on the other side.
It is very hard for her and she gets a great workout from it.
The goal is that eventually she will be able to move from a lying to sitting position without assistance.
The Largest Aquarium in the World and Coca-Cola
Diana’s best friend, Yana, came to visit for the weekend also (not a surprise). So we had 6 girls in one apartment, but it was the best weekend we’ve had here so far! Amazing for her to come down from Canada for a weekend!! So much love!
Diana planned the entire day on Sunday played tour guide for the group. We got up and took the bus and the subway to the Georgia Aquarium (largest in the world apparently) and spent a few hours touring everything from the smallest fish to whale-sharks; 6 foot sting-rays to sea otters. It was a beautiful experience.
Then, we went to lunch at a local restaurant serving Bison meat; and we all tried it…leaner than beef.
Afterwards, we went to the World of Coca-Cola; which tells the history of the company, shows how drinks are made, has a 3D theater, and allows guests to taste 60 of their drinks from around the world (coke now owns over 400).
We finished with Coke and walked to the Westin Hotel for a view of Atlanta from their 72nd floor lounge.
Everyone was tired from those activities and we got home where Diana’s friend made an exquisite French meal – complete with a Cabernet Sauvignon. (She can visit anytime!)
We all sat and talked and talked until it was late. We all wanted to stay up longer, but couldn’t keep our eyes open.
Sleep.
Fishing and Hunting
On Saturday, one of Diana’s IBM co-workers came to visit from Prague!
It was a huge surprise and Diana had no idea that she would be here. It was wonderful to see her face as we walked through the door. I had gone out for a bike ride, stopped at the airport, picked her up, and came straight home…haha!
Diana signed up to go on a field trip with Therapeutic Recreation to a Park where you can fish and shoot. There were about 10 people on the trip and each brought some family members along, so it was a nice group. We went to a pond that had a wheelchair-accessible paths to get to the water and a small picnic area. We had sandwiches and sodas and Shepherd staff brought all the equipment for fishing – complete with live bait.
The patients and family were fishing…but even with 20 poles in the water, we didn’t get one fish…grrr…
After the fishing, we went down the road to a shooting range (yes, we are in the South, and they love hunting and shooting). They brought 22 caliber rifles and Glock pistol. Diana got set up with some equipment that attached to her armrest and held the rifle for her and then there was a firing mechanism attached to the trigger that helped her to fire.
But, I think the most fun was watching Petra shoot…can you picture her with a pistol in her hand?
…actually, it was a little scary… :)
Discharge Date: May 15
Last week, Diana got her discharge date from the Day Program: May 15.
Her discharge date was set by her therapy group and is based on her personal rehabilitation goals. She met with each therapist one on one the first day and set aggressive goals of what she wants to be able to do. Her group has a conference every Thursday, and they set May 15 as the amount of time they need to work with her and help her accomplish her goals.
Rehab Update
Ok, things have been pretty busy here since Diana started the Day Program.
She loves it and says that it is very challenging. They are helping her practice sitting and balancing; using her core muscles. Also, they are teaching her how to improve her arm control by rolling her hand in circles while resting on a balloon (among many other exercises).
Indoor Soccer Tournament
Last night was the final match of an indoor soccer tournament fundraiser for Diana.
Many thanks to Fortunado and Fran for putting it on; and to Soccer with Aldwin in Norwalk for supplying soccer gear for the raffle; but most of all to the very dedicated members of the indoor league who signed up to play.
It is such a motivation for Diana to know her friends are behind her and to see them coming together like this.
Thanks.
First Day in Day Program
Today started with an overview of the Day Program at 8:30. We met the case manager and learned how the program is structured: 9AM to 4PM daily with breaks throughout the day. Once again, each day is specially tailored to her needs; and the program is largely based on what Diana’s goals are.
She spent the bulk of the day meeting with therapists one on one to explain what she would like to focus on and master before returning home. She wants to go back to work and of course coaching soccer, so she will be learning skills here to allow her to get back to the life she loves.
The team will meet on Thursday, after working with her Mon, Tue, and Wed, to determine how long it will take each of them to help Diana meet her individual goals in the Program.
Happy Easter!!
Hi everybody out there in Diana-land :)
We had a great Easter comprised of sleeping in, eating, and then going to downtown to explore Atlanta’s famous “Underground”. This was the first time we took Diana out by ourselves, so it was a very big accomplishment for her. We used a taxi service that has handicap vans. We shopped until we dropped and then had a very southern dinner at the Waffle House before coming back to the apartment to watch a movie and relax.
Thank you to everyone for the Bar Fundraising Night
I talked to the event organizers today and they told me that Casey’s was packed last night; that they need a bigger venue for the next event.
I’m jealous that we weren’t there for the party, but we will be there soon enough.
If you didn’t make it, I’m sorry, maybe we’ll see you at the next one!

Moving Day
Once again Diana’s moving plans snuck up on me….
She moved out of her room in Shepherd into the family apartments located adjacent the main parking garage here at Shepherd. She gets to live with us in the apartment now through the Day Program. This gives her the opportunity to experience life without nurses and 24/7 support and allows her sister and cousin to practice all of the skills they’ve been trained on.
She will begin outpatient therapy in the Day Program on Monday.
She is one step closer to coming home.
Graduation
Diana had a graduation with her therapists today. They played music and gave her a shirt that she is now a Shepherd grad! They also gave her the nickname “model” since she is always wearing different hats all the time. She has over 40 now!!
Tomorrow is her last official day of inpatient rehabilitation before she transfers to the “Day Program” next Monday. Friday is the moving day.  So, she is ready to move up and on.
Trach Tube Out
Today is the day that Diana is to have her trach tube removed – finally!
After it is removed, she will be going home without any tubes – which is very exciting! However, the most important part about getting the tube out of her neck has to do with her sleep. Right now, she sleeps on her back or side and has to be turned to prevent pressure sores or skin problems. Without a tube in her neck, she will be able to sleep on her stomach – and this allows her to not have to be turned in the middle of the night…and get a full 8 hours of rest without interruption!
Family Training Day
Today was a practice day for Diana’s family. Her sister and cousin had a chance to show their skills for the nursing staff and therapists. They got Diana out of bed, gave her a shower, dressed her, and put her into her chair, fed her breakfast, and went with her all day to help her with any problem. The training is intended to make Diana and her family understand what it will be like when they leave Shepherd, and how they must problem solve by themselves to assist Diana.
On the fundraising side, we are continuously applying for grants and foundations to seek out funds in addition to what we are generating through NTAF and other fundraisers. We are still looking at places in CT and would love to sign a lease this week for Diana. Also, we are still trying to locate a van for her PerMobile C300 wheelchair. Thank you to all parties involved in assisting with these two items.
Thank You for Last Night at the Game!
Thank you to all of those that contributed to Diana Silonova’s event last night, whether that by attending the game, purchasing raffle tickets, bidding on silent auction items, attending the youth clinic prior to the game or just by donations.
Â
Despite the brisk weather, a good crowd turned up for an exciting game. While the cause of raising money for Diana was the most important thing of the evening, both UB and Fairfield U got something out of the game as they were both tested to their limits. It was a pacey game with the Stags ending up on top beating the Purple Knights 3-2.
Â
Again, thank you for your support and I look forward to seeing you soon again. For more information about Diana’s progress and how to continue to contribute, please visit www.silonova.com

Sincerely,

Â
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who supported what turned out to be a great evening of soccer! From the officials who all donated their time and to the student athletes from UB and Fairfield who played hard knowing how lucky they are to be able to participate in this amazing game.
Â
The most important part of the wonderful evening was the fans who gave their time and money to help a soccer friend. We all are pulling for Diana and look forward to seeing her out on the field again soon. Thank you all for your support!Â

Soccer Game Tomorrow
So, the word is out about the game tomorrow – I am hearing from people all around NY and CT that they are going and bringing friends. There are so many activities planned and such a fun crowd, that is is going to be a blast. Mingle with each other and relish the opportunity to meet all of Diana’s friends from different walks of life – together for a single cause!
If you procrastinated or if the 30th snuck up on you, there will be tickets for sale at the game, so please come and have a great time for me!!
Sun and Sundaes
We joined other families for a Sundae on Sunday in the Family Lounge this morning.  Diana chatted with some people and had some ice cream before deciding to go out and enjoy the sun. After days and days of rain, the clouds are finally parting and the sun is peeking through.
Diana is planning to come home in a month or so; and she is working everyday to get everything in line for her return.
Great News Today
In addition to the fantastic fundraising that everyone is doing, Diana is doing a great job.
Today, for the first time since January 14th, she is breathing on her own – she got her trach out!
Of course she is struggling to keep her lungs clear, and to always take deep breaths, it is the next step towards independence, and in life, we sometimes have to work hard for those things that we really want.
Co-ed Adult Soccer Tournament Just Announced!
Check information on right…..and follow the link to register.
Rainy Day Here
We had clouds and rain all day today. But Diana had therapy, and meetings and activities …so the only thing she missed was her visit to the garden.
Â
We had a very productive family meeting with her therapy team and discussed training, housing, transportation, equipment, and medication. Veronika and Petra are taking on more and more responsibilities and next week will be doing all necessary care for Diana.
Â
Diana is so excited for all of the fundraising events…she wishes she could be there…(and me t00) especially for the Party at Casey’s!!!
We will have to have another one when we get back!
Computer finally
Diana finally got to use the voice-activated computer software today for about 1.5 hours. She was on-line, checking email, and surfing the net. She feels a lot better now that she is regaining additional ‘virtual capabilities’ – if you will.
Medically, she is working very hard to get rid of her trach and has begun additional respiratory exercises to become strong enough for her doctors to close the airway prior to her discharge.
As of dinner today, she graduated to eating normal food and will soon be completely off of the feeding tube at night when she is consuming an adequate number of calories during the day.
Soccer Game on the 30th!!
I just got an email from Magnus Nilerud, the coach of the Bridgeport Womens’ Soccer team and he says that it will be a big turnout for the game on Monday. He is planning for 300+ people. If you still want tickets, please contact him asap – what a great way to spend a spring evening!
There will be lots of coverage from TV and newspapers, and also a raffle during halftime - which contains some pretty impressive memorabilia.
There will be a Tottenham Jersey that was worn by Jenas vs Manchester City that has been signed by all players, a signed Shay Given Ireland shirt, and a Kristine Lilly signed US National team jersey (and about 40 other items as well)!!!
He is taping the game and sending it to Diana…but you have to show up to have a chance to be on camera :)
Conference Call and Outdoor Exercises
Diana had a conference call with some fundraising leaders today and she is helping us plan the upcoming efforts. So that took a couple hours, but we got a lot accomplished…and she is smiling today. There are a lot of fun things coming up and we need you all to spread the word about the events…you are our virtual street team of advertisers. Go tell Diana’s story and get people involved!
After our work this morning, Diana went outside into the garden and spent a few hours in the sun. She did some arm exercises and enjoyed the excellent weather (Georgia is nice in the spring).
Spring Fling!
The weather is gorgeous here today and it is very spring-like. Diana is feeling better after getting new antibiotics. CDIFF really knocks you out for a couple days…
Shepherd is having a bbq/picnic today and staff, family, and friends are outside eating and talking; so it is a nice change for a Saturday.
Van and Apartment Request
I am putting a call out for all you on-line folks to search for used vans in the tri-state area that would be compatible with a Permobil C300 wheelchair that for purchase.
Also, Diana is seeking a new apartment or house that will be accessible for her.
We need to make a decision by next Friday about where she will be living. It should be a 2 or 3 bedroom place, with the bathroom on the same floor as one of the bedrooms and fully wheelchair accessible.
Of course we will be looking from here, but we want to involve all of our on-line friends as well so we can utilize all resources.
Thank you for your help.
Rest Day
After an action packed day yesterday, Diana is feeling under the weather today. They are running cultures to see if she has another infection, and had just ordered for her to go back on an anti-biotic this afternoon.
So, 2 steps forward, 1 back; but we are still advancing.
She is sleeping now…
Airport
Diana had a field trip to the airport yesterday.
We all left at 9AM and loaded into a bus to the Atlanta airport. Airline personnel gave a presentation on traveling with a disability and then we all went through the security, got on the inter-terminal transit, and proceeded to an empty gate where we learned how to transfer into a chair to get onto the airplane. All 8 patients and families boarded a Boeing 767 and got to practice some procedures that you would use during a flight….such as weight shifts to minimize the risk of skin damage.
We de-planed and went to the food court for a quick lunch and then got back to Shepherd in the afternoon. I know that the families loved the trip, but for the patients, it was a phenomenal opportunity to learn what’s possible.
Diana was in a great mood when we got back and she was high on life. It is refreshing to get outside and travel…and she was making jokes with the nurses that now she’s ready for business travel!
The funny part is – it’s not a joke.
Field Trip
Exciting news folks…we are going on a day trip to the airport today. We will go through security and even get on a plane – I’ll let you know how it goes…and Petra’s going to bring a camera too…
Lucky Charms
It was very green and St. Patrick’s Day in Diana’s room today… Yup, that’s right…some of D’s friends got crazy and sent us balloons and streamers and even green hats (pictures to follow). So, no sooner did her birthday decorations come down, than we had a great party and of course it put a smile on everybody’s face when they walked through the door…the only thing missing was a leprechaun…
Diana was in an awesome mood today – and has a plug over her trach hole so she is chatting with everyone, making jokes, and asking questions.
She was driving her chair all around in the room…she just has so much energy!
She got into the garden later and was doing laps around the walk. I was laughing because Veronika was almost running after her with the little cart she is suppossed to have with her…with supplies, etc. I looked at my watch and told her that I would time her next lap around; and then I asked if she’s getting an off-road wheelchair…because I know that she is going to use it for sure.
On another note, we will be moving out of family housing on Friday – as Shepherd only allows the family to stay in housing here for the initial 30 days (can you believe that we’ve already spent one month in Atlanta???) So, we are going to move to an extended stay type hotel for the duration – until Diana moves into the Day Program (if she is accepted) – at which point we all move back into Shepherd and stay in the apartment that I am sitting in as I write this to you all!!
So, I hope you had a green beer or a shot (if you are of age) for Diana…and that lucky charms are in our future…
Speeding Around and Writing Letters
Diana had a great Sunday. She relaxed with family a while and then got dressed, fixed her hair, put her jewelry on, and went for a spin around the center…she is getting so good at driving now – she can do it almost totally by herself!
After that, she composed a letter to her IBM friends and colleagues – so you should all be getting it in your inbox tomorrow bright and early!
Rainy Day here
It was cold and rainy all day here…and Diana took advantage of it and hung out in her room and watched some movies.
She did get raspberries at the store yesterday and likes having them as a special treat.
Friday Outside
This is such a fabulous story…that I have to write about it this morning…
Diana got to leave the rehab center for the first time ever on a group trip to Borders Bookstore and the local grocery store.
She and about 10 other patients boarded a bus and went on the trip. Petra, Veronika, and I accompanied her as she wizzed through the isles, debated on which gum or bread we should buy…
At Borders, she looked at some of the books that had just came out and we held them open so she could read the prologue and see if she liked it or not. Paulo Coelho (her favorite author) doesn’t have anything new for her to read…too bad!
It was about 3 hours total; so we were all pretty tired when we got back.
She is learning how to adapt to a new way of living; and she is doing it with gusto.
Donate Now: Diana’s Fund is Open!!!
Attention IBM Employees and ECCC!!!
Effective today, IBM Employees may now contribute to Diana’s fund through their ECCC Campaign. To make a pledge or update their allocations, IBM employees can send a private note to Charity Payroll Services/Endicott/IBM indicating the fund code 0Q418, NTAF Spinal Cord Injury Fund for Diana Silonova. They should indicate the semi-monthly pledge amount along with their serial number. Notes sent by March 20th would be reflected in the March 30th payroll. Any questions may be directed to Bill MacNamara/Thornwood/Contr/IBM.
Thursday – Arch Bars off!!
The highlight of the day was that D got her arch-bars off. Since she had broken her bottom jaw on both sides; and she had surgery to repair the break; she required wires to hold her teeth and jaw in place. The wires are kind of like braces, but they sit where your tooth meets the gum instead of the middle of the teeth.
So, she hasn’t been very comfortable with all that metal in her mouth and she finally finally got them off today! Although she is a little tired and I’m sure her gums will be sore tomorrow, she is smiling…I love it!
Wednesday: Voice-recognition Software
Diana got a demo of Dragon NaturallySpeaking software; a voice-recognition software that allows the computer user to do everything with only voice commands – very cool. So Diana will be back on the computer maybe next week or so.
She also got to test drive a similar model of the wheelchair that she will be ordering. It is a front-wheel drive chair and D likes it so much more than the rear-wheel model. It is more comfortable and she is not in any pain when she uses it.
After a good morning, she went out into the garden and relaxed for a bit before coming in for dinner.
Permobil c300
Diana has a wheelchair picked out (recommended by her therapists). It is made by a European company called Permobil and manufactured in the US. The c300 is a versatile chair that is a slightly smaller frame, perfect for indoor use, and good to go outside as well.
Tuesday – Family Meeting
Diana started her day with a meeting with her team of Physicians and Case Manager.
Her lead Doctor started out by saying although she has an injury at the C4 level, she is meeting and exceeding the work that has been set out for her here in Rehab and that they will be increasing her work-load. It was a serious injury, but the spinal cord was not severed, the operation has had a good result in stabilizing her neck, and she will get a lot of work done here at Shepherd over the next 6 weeks or more. Also, the first 2 years after the accident will be the most critical to regaining function and sensation. She is going to require a lot of rehabilitation, and she is ready for it!
He discussed people with worse injuries going back to work and even her driving a car again!
All in all, it was a very good, informative session and she ended it with a couple Diana-style jokes of course…keeping the Dr’s on their feet…
Monday
Diana had a great, full day with therapy, friends, and relaxing.
She was doing an exercise this morning where the therapist was asking her to try to move her thumb up…and then down…and then up….and then down. And Diana was trying and trying and she was staring at her thumb. The therapist was holding her wrist and keeping her hand up-right, and she was staring at Diana’s thumb; and I couldn’t help myself from looking…and as I was watching I was trying not to blink – because I thought that I might miss something – you know….like when a baby says a first word or takes the first step.
I think I saw it move.
I think so.
Sunday
This day was Woman’s Day in Slovakia, so Diana and Petra were saying that this is the perfect day for Diana. It is sort of like our Mother’s Day, except you don’t have to be a Mother, just a Woman, and it is a national holiday.
It was quite warm outside and she went out for a little bit, but came in later and toured around the Shepherd Center…the gym and the pool and the library.
When she got back to the room, Veronika and Petra gave her a make-over…they did her hair with gel and put some ear rings in – that her parents got her as a gift. I think Petra has a photo – I’ll have to check.
Saturday – March 7
Weekends are always quiet here, but Diana made the best of her day by first going outside for therapy. She was sitting in the sun, doing bicep curls, shoulder-shrugs, and a whole bunch of other exercises.
She spent some down time in the afternoon relaxing and watching a little tv (which she rarely watches).
Then, in the evening, she had a great conversation with Petra and was talking about how she will be a much stronger fighter with her sister here… very good for morale.
Friday News
I need to catch you guys up on some news from the past couple days!
On Friday, Diana got to go hang outside some more…it was beautiful here!!
She also got her PICC line out – so that is one less tube for her to worry with!
Then, the best news came at night – when she finally got off of the ventilator…she is not longer breathing with a machine – at all! She has a small plastic tube (trach) still in her throat, and over the next couple weeks, she will be weaned off of that as well.
Birthday
Hey everyone!
After receiving dozens of cards, balloons, flowers, and gifts today…Diana just asked me to post that this is her best birthday ever…and THANK YOU!!! to everybody out there :)
Diana’s Sister is coming!!!
Great news!
We booked a ticket for Petra to come over on the 5th!
She will be staying indefinitely with us here…keeping an eye on things :)
1st Day of Rehab Complete!
Diana worked 2 sessions today; one in the morning, and one in the afternoon.
She was driving herself in the powerchair using her left hand.
In the gym, from her chair, she did some weight training with both arms, up and down; and then in and out.
Then, later, she was doing leg stretches, etc.
The total time was about 1.5 hours.
When she got back to her room, the therapists gave her a warm pack on her neck/shoulders to help relax the muscles.
And she will sleep now and get ready for day 2 tomorrow…
The first trip down the hall!
Yesterday, while Atlanta was asleep under a blanket of snow, Diana took her first trip – on her own – down the hall and back. Using sip and puff technology (a tube that she blows into), she navigated her power wheelchair out of her room, down the hall, past smiling nurses to the therapy gym; where she caught her breath and gazed out the windows at falling flakes. We looked around the darkened gym – the weights, mats, and equipment, and prepared for the mental and physical challenge set out before her.
She drove back to her room where we hung out for a couple hours and then watched Lord of the Rings (like the rest of the country)…haha…before going to bed.
Rehab Schedule
Diana didn’t feel well all week from her antibiotics, but she has an actual schedule for rehab starting on Monday. She will see a Physical and Occupational therapist each day. She is also working with a Speech Therapist, a Dietitian, a Pulmonary-Cardiologist, a Orthopedist,  and a Neuro-psychologist…she always has a registered nurse and a respiratory therapist on hand.
This ‘team’ will be with her the entire time she goes through rehab here…they make daily and weekly reports on her progress.
Diana’s B-Day
As many of you know, Diana’s birthday is March 4th…so if you were putting cards or letters together in the next couple days, you would be right on time!
